MM4 77 GA ED/45 Fieldscope

MM4 77 Fieldscopes are the latest evolution of the MM4 concept pioneered and developed by Opticron to meet demand for high performance lightweight space saving equipment.

Designed & manufactured in Japan, the 77mm HDF ED optical system delivers a new benchmark for resolution and color contrast and comfortably outperforms older Opticron 80mm models. What is more remarkable is the size and weight of the overall package. The MM4 77 GA ED/45 is just 320mm/12.6” long and weighs 1259g/44.4oz fully armored. These figures read like a 65mm which cannot deliver the light transmission or apparent resolution of this 80mm class device.

Compatible with SDL, HDF, HR and MM3 eyepieces, existing owners can use eyepieces from other Opticron models with MM4 77 Fieldscopes.

      MM4 77 GA ED - David Chandler

      Monday, September 6, 2021

I was particularly impressed with the sharpness throughout the zoom range when viewing at close quarters. Colours were natural and there was only a little edge softness. Its low light performance was good - it was still useable away from shaded areas 30 minutes after the sun set in a mostly overcast sky - though trickier at high mag, of course.

The MM4 77 is unique to Opticron – no other brand has access to its design. Anyone thinking of spending up to £1000 on a mid-range telescope and eyepiece set should certainly consider this as an option.

      MM4 77 GA ED/45 with SDLv2 Eyepiece - Paul Brewster

      Thursday, July 25, 2019

I chose an overcast day in order to test the light gathering quality of this scope in less than ideal conditions. The first test was at 18x magnification, and the image obtained was stunning; bright and sharp with no discernible reduction in quality towards the edge of the field of view.

      MM4 77 GA ED/45 - Lee Thickett

      Wednesday, July 10, 2019

So, how to sum up the MM4 77mm? It is compact and lightweight for a 77mm and handles really nicely, being balanced on the tripod, and having well-engineered fast and slow focus modes. The two eyepieces make excellent companions for each other and the only thing on my wish list is a bit more field of view for the zoom. But really, this is a very nice set and well worth auditioning.

      MM4 77 GA ED/45 - Simon (Cley Spy)

I had a great couple of weeks using the ‘77’ in Mull. Opticron have taken the tried & tested MM4 formula, tweaked it and produced a fabulous, lightweight all-round birding scope. At no point did I regret not having my (considerably more expensive) 85mm scope instead.
